It seems like every time you turn your head these days there’s a new superhero movie coming out, or a new TV series. The latest is based on a comic book series that only serious fans of comic books would have probably heard of. Marvel has a great track record though, and Cloak Dagger might just be their next big hit.
In the comic book, Cloak Dagger follows the story of Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, two teenage runaways who were subjected to an experimental drug by a criminal chemist looking for a new synthetic heroin. The teens survive his experiments, and somehow gain superpowers. Tyrone becomes Cloak, a superhero who can pull people into a dark dimension, teleport, and become intangible. He constantly suffers from a hunger that can only be sated by stealing the life force from others, or on Dagger’s light. Tandy becomes Dagger, and can create light daggers at will which can hurt those she throws them at, or cure people of drug addictions. The series was also well known for putting together two teens from different sides of the tracks, with Tandy coming from a wealthy family and Tyrone from a poor one. They first initially appears in issues of Spider-Man in 1982.
It’s unclear how closely the TV series will follow the comic book, and we won’t find out until the 10 episode series premieres on Freeform in 2018. The preview shows Tandy (played by Olivia Holt) meeting Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) for the first time, and discovering their powers. It’s one of the most anticipated upcoming series.
