It’s hard to believe the Cannes Film Festival is turning 70 this year, but since it is, the yearly event is planning a showcase with some of the biggest stars. And some of these stars should be walking the red carpet multiple times. Perhaps the most shocking of everything though is that among the 49 films set to premiere, none of them are Hollywood studio films.
Among the names you can expect to see this year are Nicole Kidman (who is starring in four of the films playing this year), Julianne Moore, Isabelle Huppert, Jake Gyllenhaal, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Marion Cotillard. Even Adam Sandler has a film showing at this years event. The 49 films that will be played come from 29 countries, with 12 of them directed by females, and 9 of them coming from first time directors.
Among some of the most anticipated films are Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories, and Todd Haynes’ Wonderstruck. The festival will open with French director Arnaud Desplechin’s Ismael’s Ghosts, which stars Charlotte Gainsbourg and Marion Cotillard. It’s the story of a filmmaker who finds his life sent into a tailspin after a former lover returns just before he begins shooting his latest film.
The big surprise announcement is that David Lynch’s Twin Peaks revival will also premiere at this year’s festival. Oscar winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu will also unveil a virtual reality project titled Carne y arena.
While the lineup was announced, it’s not entirely set in stone. Cannes has been known in the past to add a title or two at the last minute. The 2017 edition of the Cannes Film Festival runs May 17 – 28. The complete schedule can be seen here: http://www.festival-cannes.com/en/actualites/articles/the-2017-official-selection
